The South Island fly fishing season runs from 1 October to 30 April. November through April is prime time for backcountry sight fishing, and the shoulder months of December and March often produce the most consistent hatches and the clearest water. If you are traveling from the USA, remember the seasons are flipped: our summer is your winter, so the best fishing of the year lands right in the northern off-season.
Month by month on the South Island
October: opening month. Rivers carry spring flows and fish are hungry after winter, but weather can be changeable. A good month for lower-altitude rivers and building river fitness.
November: the backcountry properly wakes up. Less-pressured fish, long daylight hours, and the first reliable dry fly action of the season.
December: a shoulder month locals quietly rate among the best. Consistent hatches, clear water, and fish that have not seen a season's worth of flies.
January: peak summer. Stable weather, warm days, and terrestrial feeding begins, with trout looking up for beetles and the first cicadas.
February: cicada time. When the cicadas are on, big browns eat large dry flies with total conviction. Book early; this is the most requested month.
March: the other standout shoulder month. Settled autumn weather, low clear rivers, and trophy browns feeding hard before winter.
April: the final month. Quieter rivers, moody light, and a real shot at the biggest fish of the season as browns bulk up pre-spawn.
What about winter?
The backcountry river season closes at the end of April, but the fishing does not stop. Through winter we run dedicated trips on the Mackenzie Country canals, which hold some of the largest trout in the world and fish year round.
If your schedule only allows a northern-hemisphere-summer trip, the canals are the reason you can still bend a rod in New Zealand in June.
Planning a trip from the USA
Prime dates and the best lodges book out six to eight months ahead, so a February cicada trip is best locked in by winter (US summer). Booking ahead also locks in current pricing before seasonal increases.
