The South Island season runs from the start of October through to the end of April. November to April is prime time for backcountry sight fishing, with the shoulder months of December and March often producing the most consistent hatches and the clearest water.

There is no single best month, which is exactly why we run a jet boat rather than commit to one river. Early season (November to December) brings hungry, less-pressured fish and long daylight. Late season (March to April) brings settled weather and trophy browns feeding hard before winter. We match the trip to the conditions on the day.

We recommend booking six to eight months ahead. Prime-season dates and the best lodges fill early, and booking ahead locks in current pricing before seasonal increases.

Absolutely. Many anglers prefer to fish their own rods and reels, and you are welcome to. If you would rather travel light, every trip includes premium rods, reels, waders, boots, tackle and flies at no extra cost, so you can turn up with nothing but a warm windproof layer.

We supply premium rods and reels, Patagonia wading apparel, boots, a full tackle selection, flies, snacks, lunch and cold drinks. Everything is high-end and well maintained. You only need to bring a warm, windproof layer, polarised sunglasses and any personal medication.

A warm windproof jacket, polarised sunglasses (essential for sight fishing), sunscreen, a hat, and any personal items. If you are fishing your own gear, bring your rod, reel and preferred flies. We handle everything else.

No. We guide anglers of every level, from first cast to seasoned trophy hunters. New Zealand sight fishing is technical, so beginners get patient instruction, and experienced anglers get put onto the hardest, most rewarding fish.

Yes, a New Zealand fishing licence is required. We can arrange this for you or point you to where to buy one online before your trip. It is inexpensive and quick to sort.

A fully licensed and surveyed jet boat, purpose-built for shallow, braided South Island rivers. It draws only a few inches of water, letting us run up rivers and side channels that are impossible to reach on foot or by 4WD.

Yes. The boat is commercially surveyed and operated under full DOC concessions and LINZ permits, with all required safety equipment on board. Your guide is a highly experienced jet boat operator who runs these rivers constantly.

It transforms it. Instead of hiking to water everyone else can reach, we push deep into the backcountry to low-pressure runs where trout rarely see a fly. It also lets us move between rivers during the day, chasing the best water clarity and conditions rather than being stuck on one beat.

Rarely, but bring a warm windproof layer just in case. The boat rides are part of the adventure and most anglers rate them a highlight of the trip.

A jet boat reaches the same remote, unpressured backcountry rivers a helicopter does, but for roughly half the cost, with none of the weight limits, weather cancellations or fixed pick-up times. Because the boat moves with you along the river, we can keep exploring new water all day and adapt to conditions in real time, rather than being dropped on a single beat and collected hours later.

Yes, considerably. Helicopter access carries a large per-hour flight cost on top of the guiding. Our jet boat reaches comparable remote water for around half the price, which is why many clients who have done heli trips switch to fishing with us.

Occasionally, for a handful of alpine headwaters, but for the vast majority of trophy backcountry rivers the jet boat gets you there just as effectively. The trade-off almost never justifies the extra cost, and unlike a helicopter the boat is not grounded by low cloud or wind.

Generally, yes. Helicopters are frequently grounded by the low cloud and strong winds common in the Southern Alps, which can cancel a day entirely. A jet boat keeps running in a far wider range of weather, so trips go ahead when heli operations are stood down.
